If you are starting a new business, you will need a business plan. The executive summary will be the first section of that plan, although it is normally the last one that is written. Your executive summary will provide a guideline for all of the other sections that you include in your business plan, sort of like a book outline. You don’t have to write a very long executive summary, provided it contains information that conveys important aspects of the overall business plan. You want the executive summary to be as brief as possible, easy to read and written in layman’s terms.

An executive summary highlights the important parts of the business plan. As such, you want it to point out at least one important statement from all of the other sections in the document. This should be a quick summary that readers can use to determine whether or not they want to invest in your new business. Once someone reads your executive summary, they will have a pretty good idea of whether or not they want to invest, so you want to make it captivating without making it too full. Short and sweet is always best, but you should ensure that you point out some interesting factual information about the business. You want the executive summary to entice readers to finish the entire business plan.

Executive summaries should include your business name, where your business is or will be located, a general overview or description of the business and your mission statement. You should also include any specific products or services that you will be providing and information about your management team if you have one.

When writing the executive summary, think about what your readers will want to know. This is something that you are going to use to gain capital for your business so think in terms of bankers or investors and what they will want to see when reading.

A good way to get the best outline of your business plan is to go through after you have drafted it and pull out the most important parts of each section. Remember that you want to highlight the key points of each section of the business plan. You can also use images or graphs if you have something that will better demonstrate the point that you are trying to make. In fact, graphs and charts are always good items to include as they show that you have done your research and are serious about this new business venture.

Before you add the executive summary to your business plan, have someone else go over it. You want someone to check the summary for typos and grammatical errors and a fresh pair of eyes can give you an idea of what they take away from the executive summary so you will know if your points were made as you wanted or if perhaps you should go back and edit the summary before you include it. You want it to be compelling and perfectly written to gain the attention that you need.
